Continuing Type Explorations

I've decided to continue the type explorations that I started two years ago. Now that the stress, class load and millions of other distractions have disappeared.

I enjoyed working with the collage of image, and drawings that I used in the previous W and S letters. So this is where I picked it back up...

DP-Mid-Semester Summary!

So I began my senior degree project with the intention of using a logical method of educating people about the atrocities of the meat industry. I found that the emotional appeal that most animal rights groups assert to be restricting their message.
Somewhere through my journey of making infographics and trying to find the context that they would be displayed in I got lost...

I started my explorations with displaying quantities to communicate the sheer mass of resources that are used to produce meat. From there I moved on to thinking about the different ways of showing one set of information through simple bar graphs, to actual quantity, and layering. Then I got into the idea of context, where is the viewer going to in counter the information, how is it going to interact with the environment etc, so I did some explorations of environmental graphics that would be seen in a store type setting. But none of this seem to be going anywhere so I started looking at why I started this project and what I was originally trying to communicate.

I started looking at the images that had inspired this project and I realized that I don’t want to do environmental graphics and I had been so worried about the context that I was losing sight of what the purpose of the entire project was. The content that I have been working on in this process is the same but I’ve decided to focus on speaking to an individual instead of trying to communicate to a large group of people. I want to create a kit that someone would receive perhaps through the mail that gives them the graphic information along with information about what they can do to make a difference. It would have the graphic, and supporting materials that would show what they can do and also show how simple it is to do. It’s not about going vegetarian or vegan it’s about making a choice to not support the meat industry.

DP - Revision to Audience

Independent Thinkers

A group of people interested in making smart and educated decisions about the company’s and products they support. They are proactive in reducing their carbon footprint and making steps to live sustainably. Their worldview is that of stewards understanding that they are here to manage the worlds resources and are ethically obligated to care and preserve the earth for future generations. They are interested in continuing to learn how they can become more environmentally and health conscious.

DP- Project Proposal

My senior degree project will focus on how the use of the rhetoric specifically logos appeal can convey information about the meat industry and its effect on the environment, health and animals in a new and more approachable and engaging way. I am focusing on the question; How can the organization of information and linear narratives help educate interested parties about the meat industry and the role that it plays within our lives, the environment and animals? In essence I am trying to focus on the many different perspectives and places that our decisions effect. My primary audience are people who are interested in learning more about the meat industry’s atrocities on our world, health and animals. The things that I create are going to be educational and informative.
The challenge of this project is the balance between the logos and the pathos appeal. There is a fine distinction between what is persuasive and what is a pathos appeal. Yet that distinction is what makes an interesting logos appeal. The responses from my peers on my second experiment has lead me to the conclusion that it is important to keep in mind that logos does not mean dry, and bare it can also be persuasive in a educational aspect.
For my project I want to create two parts the first will be targeting the online community and the idea of layered information through an interactive piece. The second will target the home space with a type of interactive mailer.
The interactive piece will allow the participator to understand what it means when you eat a piece of meat through multiple layers of information. It will allow the participator to engage in learning and discovering the secrets behind a factory farm. The mail packet will consists of several pieces that will focus on the comparison of what we are doing to the environment and what we could be doing. It will also interact or alter the home environment in some way. It will address the health, environment and animal concerns while relating it back to the viewers daily life. The goal of this project is to communicate to the audience that their lifestyle choices have very serious consequences.

DP-Responses to Experiments 2

I asked a series of question that about the persuasive qualities of the infographics.

most compelling
Book (Interacting with the information)
Cow info ( effect of illustrated amount)

most persuasive
book (compelling information)
life of the cow (factual and emotional) "a good balance of factual and emotional, and seems to put a singular cows life into perspective."

logical
cow info (visual comparison)
black bars (quick read)

educational = boring?
black bars (boring)
life of cow (informational, statistics)
cow info (informational)

not working
bar graph ( too sterile)
life of cow (not visually appealing)

DP-Experiments

What makes information more logos than pathos?
These experiments evolved from the fact that 16 pounds of grain is need to produce 1 pound of meat. The significance of the fact stems from the unbalanced ratio of what goes into making the meat and what comes out.

I began exploring different perspectives that could be taken with this information to show it in a different way. From a single person to a family of four and what we put into a cow and what we get out of a cow.

An average Americans consumption of meat and the underlying usage of grain and water that are apart of every piece of meat but is not apparent.

A four person family uses more resources than an average person does. This shows the cost to the environment that a four person family produces.

This one shows the large amount of resources that are used to sustain a cow. In contrast to what we as the consumers get from the cow (meat and milk) and then the left over waste that pollutes our environment.

With this infographic I tried to break down the infomation that I was using into sections that together told a story.

DP-Experiment Outline

  • How can infographics be used to show how the meat industry effects our health?
  • How can infographics be used to show how the meat industry effects our environment?
  • How can infographics be used to show how the meat industry effects our animals?
  • How can interactivity with infographics engage the viewer through multiple layers of information?
  • What makes information more logos than pathos?
  • How does the interaction of multiple view points (Health, Environment, Animals) change the message or balance btw logos and pathos?
  • How does the rendering of imagery effect the message or balance btw logos and pathos?

DP-Graphic Design Goals

I would like to work for a socially conscious design firm that works on campaigns with non-profit organizations to provide the public with needed information. I think I would prefer it to be a small firm with more than just designers working at the office. I don't really have a specific medium or type of work that i'm interested in. I think I'm more concerned with who the work is for. I don't ever want to be in a position that forces me to work for a company that I don't believe in.

I want to live somewhere warm without any of these miserably cold, depressing winters. I want to live close enough to work to ride or walk. I would prefer a bigger city that is near some sort of water that is not a pool.

DP-Question for Degree Project

"How can information architecture help educate interested parties about the truths of the meat industry and the role that it plays within our lives?"
(question by Adam McBride)

How can information architecture be used to educate interested parties about the meat industry's effects on our lives, the environment and animals?

"How can the organization of information and linear narratives help educate interested parties about the meat industry and the role that it plays within our lives, the environment and animals?"

DIC Post

Title
Save the Abandoned Cats!

Description
Save the Abandoned Cats! was created to deal with the overwhelming number of cats that are being abandoned and relinquished daily in Kansas City. The reason people give for abandoning these cats are numerous but the cause is a lack of emotional connection between owner and pet. Many preconceived notions about cats lead to a misunderstanding about the needs and required care for these pets. It hopes to change the way we think about our pets while encouraging and facilitating interaction between owner and pets. The brand challenges the way we think about cats by the associations of cats to humans while also including a game component.

Visual Advocacy - Direction?

After looking through my past projects throughout my time here at KCAI. The projects I most enjoyed seem to be in three groups. I enjoy image making that are hand rendered or real environments and photography. Examples would be the info arch website (Recyclables), Image making class (self portrait), user experience (battledore). I also like dealing with typography in book formats. I like the consistency, organization and the fine tuning thats involved with setting type. Examples would be Typography classes 1-4 and specifically the russel wright project, gertrude stein, bembo, conference. And I also enjoy interactive work particularly building websites, navigation, user play. Examples would be sound and motion (interactive piece, and information movie), multimedia xp (bike website), info arch (all).
Some criteria for this project is that I want to fulfilling a need in the community. I want it to facilitate some reaction in my audience and in the end improve their life in more than an aesthetically pleasing way. I want to try to avoid the issues that I have pursued in the past so as not to be redundant or caught in a grove.
Last semester I began exploring the idea and meaning behind image making. So much of the images produced today our merely decorations that have only aesthetic value without any true meaning behind them. Perhaps it is the product of a poorly educated designer or a creation of our image stimuli environment that over produces meaningless images to sell products that do not and never will enhance our lives. I don’t think I want to continuing this project but I think this idea of levels of meaning is still really interesting to me and applicable to many different things.
I defiantly want my project to be something that is “real world” so people can imagine it actually being used. I want to focus on a group that doesn’t get a lot of attention and could really use some help visually organizing things. I don’t want to work to closely with the group I’m making things for because I want it to be my own design and not me working for a group.

Projects I liked in my design classes

Visual Advocacy - Prototypes

My solution to this problem is to create a brand that address both of these directions. In hopes that it will reach a larger group of people because every cat owner purchases the basic cat essentials such as litter box, kitty food, collars, toys, food bowls, cat food, treats and litter. So by placing it in mainstream shops it will have a better chance of reaching this audience.
This prototype is a medication for tick and fleas that is branded bug spray as a way to humanize it. at the top is a common flea and tick remover for comparison.

The litter box is branded potty trainer to reinforce the idea that kittens and children have to go through similar processes when they are young.

so this another way of addressing the how we think about cats its a suggestion sticker that makes a relation between cats and people through birthday’s.

This is a potential treat container that is branded candy because it is the equivalent to treats for cats. So in this way it humanizes the item. It also has the peek-a-boo game which touches on the other direction for this project that encourages owner and pet to interact through play. This could also be applied to paper bags.

Visual Advocacy - Outside Interaction

So I began this process of contacting outside sources by researching all the local shelters and foster homes. I than emailed asking if they had the time to help me with my project and fill out an interview. Out of about six organizations only two replied; The Humane Society and No More Homeless Pets in KC.

I spoke to Karen from the Humane Society first which was really helpful at the beginning of my project because she helped steer me away from one really bad misconception. That increase in abandoned pets was due to the recession. She said from her experience that people have a problem with commitment when it comes to pets. That the ones that end up in the shelters are usually impulse buys and that when the "fun times" wore off they gave them up. She also mentioned that there seemed to lack a connection or bond between owner and pet.

After talking to Karen I sent out a mass email to the KCAI student body asking cat owners what kind of relationship they had with there cat(s) and some background information. For the most part I got the response I assumed I would get which confirmed what I had been thinking. Some of the responses to how abandoning cats be discouraged where interesting because they were on target with the social change I was considering.

The next person I talked to was Kathy from No More Homeless Pets in KC. I began this correspondence by emailing the organization. They directed me to Kathy and Shirley who lead the Feral Cat program. The emails went no where and they never did respond to my questionnaire so I showed up for the monthly feral cat clinic. Shirley gave me a tour of the facility which was really interesting (they do a program called TNR that traps neuters and releases feral cats.) And then I talked to Kathy about my project and showed her my prototypes. She said that she thought that this was a very important area to work in because every cat deserves a better life which is why she works with feral cats because no one cares about them. Her comments on the prototypes were that she thought it made sense and that it was interesting that i was trying to change the stereotypes our society has about cats. She did question the terms abandon and relinquished cats because to her someone who abandons a cat is doing a much more horrible thing than someone who relinquishes a cat because they at least care enough to give them a chance at survival. She said that she could see it being implemented in a real world situation.

I also showed my prototypes to Josh Herron who is a fellow senior at the kansas city art institute in animation. he recently adopted a cat about a month ago named turbo.
I showed him my prototypes and asked him how he would react to seeing these on products he buys for his cat. He said he thought they were funny but he wasn’t sure how effective they would be on changing peoples feeling of cats. He said that growing up with pets in his family they treated “pets as pets” and they were always part of the family. His mom would prepare special food for their pets. and He said he couldn’t imagine abandoning or giving his cat away for any reason.

My last user was Turbo who enjoyed playing with the toy I made for her.
